BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
There is a lack of sound evidence from appropriately designed on the efforts of weaning (introduction of solid foods) on outcomes such as growth and mobility. This is surprising, given the radial shift in the dietary pattern of infants which occurs over a relatively short period of time at around 12-17 week of age; as a result of the weaning process. This shift is from a diet comprising a high fat, low protein single food, breast or formula milk, to a more complex mixture of foods, which is relatively high in protein with a low to exposure of infants to bacterial and chemical contamination, and to food allergens, coincides with this dietary change. Most studies relating to infant nutrition have focused on milk feeding, and the effect of introducing solid foods has been relatively neglected.
Dietary surveys of presumably health populations, factorial approaches and balance techniques are the methods used most often to estimate nutrient requirements. None of particularly satisfactory because they seldom adequately address growing concerns that nutrients intakes supports long-term health and optimal functional capacities rather than just avoid acute deficiency states. Cereals are deficiency in lysine but have sufficient sulphur containing amino-acid which are the limiting factors in legumes
It is clear that there is range between clear deficiency and optimal adequacy within which human adapt.
The closer one is to deficiency within that range, the more vulnerable one is to common stresses (e.g. infections) and the less one is able to meet increased physiological demands. Perhaps the best examples of the conceptual difficulties that arise due to the capacity of human to ‘adapt’ to a range of intake are debates that swirl around the ‘small is beautiful’ proposition and the adaptation to lower energy intake’ view point. The format has been discredit on fairly conclusively while the latter has been abandoned in recent estimates of energy needs. This is in recognition of the fact that humans can adapt to a range energy intakes, but at a cost whenever there are sustained deviation from the requirement levels. Thus, energy requirement are estimated on the basis of multiples of metabolic rate to ensure that needs are met for both maintenance and socially acceptable and necessary level of physical activity.
This study will create a public awareness on the part of the nursing mother that her articulated plain is wean child between is efficiently and effectively being pursued. Various hospitals will put in place all mechanism to protect and encourage the nursing mother to give appropriate weaning diet to the children
In this research work, effort will be made to develop a weaning food from oil seeds of Soya beans, groundnut and sesame oil seed (they served as sources of energy and protein) together with flour of geminated sorghum (sources of energy) blended together in the ratio of 1:1:1:3 ½, thus a weaning food rich enough in energy and protein to PEM in infants was obtained.
