ABSTRACT

This project work focused on evaluation of teachers perception of Yoruba curriculum in some selected secondary schools in Abeokuta. The study employs a survey and descriptive design. questionnaire was used to carryout the investigation and 100 respondent was used to carryout the research. The data collected from the different items in the questionnaire were analysed using simple and percentage from the findings of the study, it was recommended that government should employ experienced and qualified Yoruba teacher in public secondary schools to handle the subject in each schools and provide necessary instructional material to teach the subject.
1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Education is used as an instruction of change in any nation especially in Nigeria, so for education to achieve its objective there is the need to plan, design and implement a curriculum of any subjects strives to contribute to the national goals and aspiration which includes.

  1. The inculation of national consciousness and national unit.
  2. The inculation of right types of values and attitude for survival of individual and the Nigerian society.
  3. The training of mnd in the understanding of the world around and
  4. The acquisition of the appropriate skill, abilities and competencies both mental and physical as equipment of the society.

The curriculum of the secondary school in the 9-3-4 system personal and social outlook and the new Yoruba language curriculum package for the senior school programmes has a lot of special features which makes teaching and learning of Yoruba language a more challenging, appeasing, relevant and rewarding experience.

Among the special features of the curriculum are:

  1. The provision of Yoruba language programme that is based on choice or suitable and relevant themes units, contents, teaching methods students activities, teaching aids and evaluation.
  2. The reduction in the scope and content of secondary school Yoruba language without losing the high quality required at that level.
  3. The provision of a wide range of experience for students in the use of the concept centered approach to earning, problem solving and activity-based technique for the acquisition of basic Yoruba’s knowledge and skills.
  4. The inclusion of innovation element into the syllabus, through the emphasis placed on Yoruba throughout the 3 year course and the introduction of Yoruba’s principle concepts and skill, that are relevant to the current trends in the discipline.
  5. The organisation of the programme around a carefully selected sequence to integrate the knowledge and experience gained in the physical, human regional Yoruba as a subject in the senior secondary school in accordance with the National Policy on Education (2006) helps the Nigeria secondary school students to:
  • Understood the concept of man-environment relation that is to examine the life of a man within the physical and cultural environment and to explain their interactions.
  • To appreciate and develop a sense of responsibility towards one’s own society and interest in the formulations of natural goals and policies especially as they influence the different resources and regions of the area.
  • Develop sympathetic understanding of the people of other land: they may have different assembles of resources different goals and different problems from the people of their home area.
  • Organise and formulae principle according to acquired Yoruba’s concept which they can use to analyse and interpret spatial problems in their immediate and wider environment.
  • To develop skills and techniques for accurate orderly and objective Yoruba investigation to be carried out both in the classroom and in the immediate environment.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The study is targeted towards appraiser the Yoruba curriculum in some secondary school in Ogun State. It also examined the way Yoruba teacher perceive Yoruba curriculum.
1.3     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study was embarked upon to see whether the existing Yoruba curriculum is adequate to meet the stated objective in the National Policy on Education and if teachers and government do things in the appropriate ways to encourage the realization of the curriculum dreams

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTION

From the foregoing the following research question were raised:

  1. What are the perception of teacher on activities recommended in the curriculum?
  2. What are the instructional aids is recommended in the curriculum?
  3. What are the things you like and benefit in teaching Yoruba?
  4. What are disadvantage aspect in teaching Yoruba?
  5. In Yoruba curriculum there are many aspects.

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Due to time and financial constraint the research was limited to some secondary school in Abeokuta North and South Local Government of Ogun State that involved one hundred (100) Yoruba teachers.
1.6     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Yoruba as a versatile, intellectually, stimulating school subject (NERDC, 1985) needs to be handled by qualified, competent and resourceful teachers through the effective use of instructional aids and modern evaluation techniques. But it is so unfortunate that are no resources for Yoruba teachers and no new innovations.

This study will be of assistance to Yoruba teachers, educational administrators both in schools and Ministry of Education to create an enabling environment that would make learning conducive, effective and interacting. It will also promote the teaching of Yoruba.  It will also enable the administrators to make better policy in the curriculum of the subject especially Yoruba.

It will make Yoruba curriculum to be handled by qualified teachers. It will motivate the students to pursue at higher level and there will be instructional aids and textbooks that will make learning effective. The teachers will also be able to employ method of assessment that will enhance the thinking abilities of the students.
1.7     DEFINITION OF TERMS

The writer would like to define the following words in order to clarify any ambiguity that may likely arise on their usage.

CURRICULUM: it is a systematic programme of activities made by government for the senior school students for the purpose of bringing about changes in the pupils behaviour as means of developing the personality of individual under the guidance of the school.

EVALUATION: According to the Longman Dictionary it is defined as the opinion formed about amount, value or quality of something after studying it carefully.
