CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the Study

It was observed that the non use of instructional material is common among primary schools nowadays most especially in Abeokuta South Local Government area of Ogun State.

Government has made some efforts to check these social vices with view to improve on the use of instructional materials for teaching and learning, most teachers still dispense information using traditional lecture methods without regard to students learning abilities.

The teaching methods are theoretical, extremely didactic and teacher directed, instead of being experimental or activity base.

A study of teaching behaviour and student achievement in learning shows that student activities are better than teachers activities in promoting authentic learning at least in primary schools.

However, the major problem of learning with the conventional school setting is the undue emphasis on verbalism as the sole mode of communication between the teacher and the learners such as Maduabum (2004) have proved that mode simply make learning abstract and inactive as it address only one of the many senses of human understanding and communication. In some cases such as the hard of learning otherwise termed hearing in paired Ema (2001) verbalism has no place in the programmes with the advancement in knowledge and proliferations of a wide variety of instructional materials and media such as television, radio, motion pictures, wall chart on scope of knowledge attitude and ways of perception. This impact according to Ema is evident in the manner the schools and scientist respond to local and international issue communication to them through the various media.

The research work will also focus on the reason why teachers use all these materials in teaching in the schools. The use of instructional materials in most primary schools the use of the instructional materials in some of those schools are only noticeable when teachers trainee go o n for the teaching practice (T.P).
