1.1 Background to the Study
More than ever before, in most recent time, the insanity manifestation in the mode of dressing (of ladies in particular) on the campuses of most of our tertiary institutions if not all, is alarming and this calls for an urgent attention. This observation has led to various debates on the introduction of dress code in tertiary institutions. Some institutions are even in the process of implementing (if not already implemented) all in the bid of bringing sanity, protection of dignity of womanhood on campuses and to reduce the rate of the incidence of rape as a result of the provocative dressing of some ladies.
Isaacson (2000) observed that provocative mode of dressing of female students on campuses have led to violence, theft, gang activities among others. This view is also supported by a concerned American Christian Newspaper. “The sword of the Lord” in 1993 when it suggested that, the laws of the land should be made to take care not only of rapists but also of the females that incite them and that such accomplices should also be jailed for solicitation as prostitutes for indecent exposure.
There is an adage which says “the way you dress is the way you will be addressed”. Dress code on campuses is simply a law passed by the authorities of some universities and other tertiary institutions in order to ensure that students dress properly and decently. The dress code, which has been passed in many institutions goes further to specify specific uniform (dresses) for students in some professional courses such as law and accounting.
Furthermore, in order to ensure compliance to the dress code law, the school authorities have empowered the school security personnel to turn back any student not properly dressed from the school premises. Apart from the security, lecturers have also been empowered to send out from lecture halls students who do not comply with the dress code.
