The experiment was carried out in Animal Pen of Agricultural Science Department of Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of different housing units on egg laying capacity of snails. 60 healthy snails were used. The snails were divided into 3 groups of 20 snails in each group which are replicates of 10,10 per groups in different housing units, cage, basket and tyre
The snails were fed with unripe pawpaw, pawpaw leaves, maize chaff and powdered egg shell everyday for eight (8) weeks and they were weighed weekly throughout the experimental period.
It was observed that snails in the tyre performed better than those in cage and basket due to their increase in weight and growth. There was low egg laying in cage and basket

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A lot of Nigerians are as a result of the prevailing economic situation in the country suffering from various forms of malnutrition and stress, which consequently pre-dispose them to various infectious diseases. The demand for animal protein has become very acute; this high demand has forced the price of animal protein up because of the supply.
Ikpi et al (2008) observed that out of average 58.8g of total protein reported to be available to an average person in Nigeria only 8.4g comes from animal sources where as food and Agriculutral organization. F.A.O (2006) recommended 70g of protein per adult per day of which 35g should come from animal protein. The high cost of conventional animal protein source such as beef; chicken and fish coupled with the fall in purchasing power of consumers.
The low consumption of animal products has led in most cases to the development of animal protein deficiency related problems such as kwashiorkor and marasmus among the vulnerable.
The iron deficiency anaemia which is common in tropical countries could be treated by consuming snails because it contains 45-50% iron; they have a crude protein of about 65% which is higher than most meat product except fish protein; 30% mineral; low in fat, 0.05-0.8% sodium and cholesterol (Wosu 2003).
The need to enhance the mass production of snails cannot be over estimate because snails can be reared both on small scale and large scale production system (Elinsile 2002). Snail rearing can be seen as a veritable means of generating income and to achieve self sufficiency in hard times as presently experienced in Nigeria today.
There is now a renewed interest in snail forming because of its inherent importance to food security and sustainable livelihood in rural and urban resident.
This lead us to the study of effect of different housing units on egg laying capacity of snails.
1.2 MATING AND EGG LAYING
Snails are a unique animal which have both male and female reproductive organs; in short hermaphrodites. In spite of being hermaphrodites, they perform intercourse with another snail of same species before laying eggs. Some snails act as males one season and in another season as females and fertilize each other simultaneously. The mating of snails occurs only when they become mature or adult enough. Generally, the mating occurs in the late spring or early summer. After doing intercourse, snail can store its sperm for up to year; but usually it lays egg within in a few weeks. Mating also depends on origination although they are same species as for example, a Helix aspersa from Southern France may deny a Helix aspersa from Northern France.
At least two inches deep soil is suitable for laying eggs. The place should be pests free such as ants; ear wigs; millipedes etc.
Dry soil, clay soil, and heavy soil, is not suitable for laying eggs. It decreases the reproduction and hatching ability. Hatchability of eggs depends on soil temperature; soil humidity, soil composition etc. The soil which is rich in moisture is suitable for laying eggs. After laying egg snails lose its weight and some do not recover it. And investigation says that about one-third of the snails die after the breeding season.
It is recommended to the farmers that a hygienic environment of snails can prevent the spread of disease and improve the health and grow rate of snails. For example removing of replacing daily food to avoid spoilage. Farmer should add earthworms to the soil that helps to keep the pen clean and also have a concern about intestinal infections that causes for the bacterium pseudomonas.
Snails may be attacked by parasites; nematodes, trematodes; fungi, and micro arthropods when the populations of snails are dense
Careful consecrations have to for predators such as; rats, mice, moles, skunks, weasels, birds, etc.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It was deduced that upon the importance of snail farming to every household many farmers do not engage in rearing the snail or involve in production of snail for consumption of rural or local level due to its slowness apart from that the snail has traditionally been seen as a symbol of laziness. In Christian culture, it has been seen as a symbol of the deadly sin of sloth psalms 58:8 uses snail slime as a metaphorical punishment.
Few people were known to be engaged in snail farming for household food security despite the high level of protein with other elements such as calcium, phosphorus and iron, people do not like it because of its slimy body and the effort made to clean it more often.
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Anaemia: A medical condition in which somebody has to few red cells in their blood; making them took pale and feel weak.

Fertile: Is the ability of the snails being reared to produce offspring.

Hermaphrodite: A bisexual organism i.e. a person; an animal or a flower that has both male and female sexual organs and characteristics.
Kwashiorkor: A dangerous form of MALNUTRITION that is caused by not eating enough PROTEIN.
