RESEARCH BODY

ABSTRACT

This study aims at examining the effect of parental educational attainment and types of parenthood on pupil’s academic performance of primary five (5) basic sciences in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. To collect information on this; an inventory record were administered to some selected primary schools. Some of the items in the inventory record include; gender of pupils, parents’ educational attainment, types of parenthood. All research questions were tested. All questions were not reflected as a result of the findings.

As a result of the findings the following Hypothesis were made;

  • There is no significant differences among the performance of primary five (5) basic science pupils of different parental educational attainment. Since α= 0.05<0.935
  • There is no significant differences between the performance of primary five (5) basic science pupils of single and double parent. Since α= 0.05<0.974.
  • There is no significant differences between the performance of male and female primary five (5) basic science pupils. Since α= 0.05<0.0116.

As a result of the findings, the following recommendation were also made;

  • A support group and counseling services should be made available for pupils in the school.
  • Parent should be advised during parent/teachers association meeting to pay special attention to their children academic progress instead of only concentrating on their various occupations to the utter request of their children.
  • The government should release enough funds into schools and try to monitor its spending to ensure that basic school needs of the students are met.

CHAPTER 0NE

  • INTRODUCTION
  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Education is the primary agent of transformation towards sustainable development. It increases  peoples capacities to transform their visions for society into reality. All countries strive for quality education for their sustainable development. The government of Nigeria like any other African country, consider education as a fundamental human right and an essential means to ensure that all Nigeria realize their full potentials. It places special emphasis on basic education as a priority area within the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP) because of the strong correlation between education and improved economic opportunities, better life and fewer children ( family planning), especially for girls.

The Government of Nigeria cannot satisfy educational needs of its increasing population, so the private sector also plays a great role in educational development by creating schools known as private schools which operate at all levels of education from nursery to the tertiary and enroll a good number of people. In the past, the historical growth in enrollment was largely a public sector phenomenon, involving schools financed almost entirely by the government amd managed either by the government itself or, in the case of private subsidized schools, b churches and other organizations ( World Bank 2004).

Good parenting promotes and support the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parents who are the major stakeholders in the business of parenting play vital roles in the course of rising up their children. As such they decide what is to be learnt by their children. Lareur (2002) observed that parents are expected to make decisions about their childs education.

Also, parents play modeling role to their children, the children watch them and imitate them either they engage in wrong doing or in right attitude, the absolute control of parents over their children depends on so many factors and these factors have a long a way to go in the entire progress of their children. Kettner (2008) opined that terms of education without much stress.

Parents with right attitudes towards education have greater tendency to raise educated and polished children to be better off when their present attainment is compared to that of their attainment in future. On the other hand many illiterate parents may not see any tangible reason for sending their children to school and this has a long lasting effect on the lives of such children as many of them find themselves in the pool of helplessness and hopelessness.

Generally speaking, there is a significant correlation between parental educational  attainment and academic performance of pupils in school. Although few wealthy parents, in spite of their enormous resources still have children with low intellectual abilit9y, and in rare cases the reverse is the case for poor parents. At present, low performance of children in the academics calls for urgent attention as one can hardly submit that a particular factor is responsible for this situation. Wilkinson ( 2009) asserted that arrays of factors combined together to make a child to be less progressive in his academic performance.

Parents are of different classes and as such their effects on their children especially as regards education takes different dimension ranging from economic status, educational background, Marital status and a host of other factors. Parents with sound educational background are well exposed and they see education as being paramount in life. Single or divorce parent sees child up bringing as a tedious task as they may not be able to cater completely for all the needs of their children. At times, when the situation becomes unbearable they tend to find avenue to jump out of the problem they find themselves. In order to achieve this they may stop their children education and enroll them in enterprise of craft or trade, better still some enroll their children as apprentices in workshops to learn vocations like welding, Mechanics, Radionic, Plumbing, etc.

Subsequently, children from wealthy homes have almost everything at their disposal and they find teaching and learning process more interesting. Graetz (2002) submitted that low socio-economic status family.

Religious background also plays a vital role in the education of pupils for instance some faction in Muslim faith perceive Western Education as a taboo and they wage war against anybody that try to introduce Western Education to them. In order to corroborate this submission, Boko-haram sector in the North is kicking against western education and several lives and properties have been lost.

Academics performance of a child can also be hindered by genetic factor. Parents carrying genes responsible for high academic performance have the tendency to produce children of their kinds in terms of academic attainment while the same thing is applicable to parents carrying genes responsible for low academic performance. In actual sense genes transfer from parents to children is a major factor that determine the general make up of the child; hence the need for this study is to determine the effect of parental educational attainment and types of parenthood on Pupils Academic Performance in Odeda Local Goernment.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The importance of education in an individual cannot be over emphasized. Education has a long lasting impact on ones life. The acquisition of knowledge and skills and all other things that is worthwhile are transmitted to a person through formal amd informal education determines his/her potential in future.

At the end of every instructional period in school comes examination over the years, the rate of poor performance in various school examinations such as the senior secondary school certificate examination (SSCE). If this trend is not nip in the bud, it will have grave repercussion on the lives of the pupils, their parents and the society at large.

It is a glaring fact that home is the first school for a child where he or she is thought the basic norms and values by the parent before the child leaves for the formal education. As regard this parents are expected to play the larger role in the academic attainment of their children, yet their effort appears to be less profitable. To this end , the study is to determine the effect of parental educational attainment and types of parenthood on pupils academic performance in Odeda Local Government.
