CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Peace Corps is an agency designed to serve a particular community, mostly in developing countries. For instance, the American Peace Corp; an agency of the United states government sends American volunteers to developing countries, whereby they work on many projects such as educational, construction etc. projects.  The American Peace Corp was established in 1961.

The Peace Corp of Nigeria (PCN) is a non-governmental and uniformed youth organization that focus on knowing the youths, from their dreams and aspirations to failures, fears, passion and personality with the focus of channeling their energy towards the Socio-economic and Political advancement of the nation. It was founded by a youth strategist, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson A.O. Akoh on the 10th of July, 1998 in Kaduna state.

The vision and objective of the Peace Corps of Nigeria is to “Train, Educate and Re-orientate the youths on their future leadership roles in the society, Respect constituted authorities, know the Art of Nation Building, the Rule of Law and Democratic Principle, and finally to impart a high sense of citizenship and good leadership in the youths.

The Nigerian Peace Corp to some extent might actually affect the nation. Nigeria has been a nation battling with the issue of unemployment of its youth for decades. Many measures and strategies have been tried by the different government policies to reduce unemployment to some extent, but no improvement yet. In fact, year in year out, unemployment rate has increased exponentially in the nation.

Government, non-governmental and individuals have been putting great efforts to reduce unemployment as the nation produce thousands of graduates every year.

The Peace Corp of Nigeria is actually a prospect for the reduction of youth unemployment in the nation. But since human beings view things from different perspective, someone, might actually not see its effect on the reduction of youth employment in Nigeria.

Exclusively, the membership of the Peace Corp of Nigeria is composed of Nigerians and open to all youths of both gender within the ages of 18-35, irrespective of their political or social status, state of origin, religion and ethnic group.  The membership of the organization is in three categories; the permanent staff officers, the peace corps volunteers and the student membership.

With a mandate for youth advocacy, the Peace Corp of Nigeria has chosen every 10th of July as its anniversary /founder’s day. They depend on donations from local and international donor agencies, grants for specific projects, subventions from government and private corporations, gifts, requests and various fees levied within the organization.

Frankly, the Nigerian government need to embrace movements and schemes that would help it increase employment rate, since it cannot come up with a temporal or permanent solution to the problem of youth unemployment. Even if the government comes up with a scheme, the issue of maintenance and continuity might still arise.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The fact that unemployment of Nigerian youths have not seen any light and still a mirage is a social problem. A prompt approach has to be used to quickly come to the aid of Nigerian youths to engage them physically and in their minds also; because an idle mind and hand is an avenue to think, plan and execute crimes and evil of all sort. More schemes might be a way out to also assist the Nigerian government to reduce unemployment.
