1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Music to many people in many cultures is an important part of their way of life, social and cultural activities. Music can also be described as a phenomenon using the medium of sound which is organised and manipulated into socially accepted patterns that communicate intelligibly and meaningfully, verbally or non-verbally, feelings, emotions, ideas and events to people.

Ekweme (2008) also music can be refer to as a repertoire and channel of communication which serves as a potent weapon of social change, through a particular language of expression of music you easily know which part of the continent or country a group of musicians come’s from and provides the opportunity for all classes of people to meet as equals.

African music is historically ancient, and diverse with the different regions and nation of African having district musical tradition. Africans music is one of the cultural indices that make Africans African. It is a cultural identity that has to do with studying, playing of instrument, dance and use of various artifacts. But in simplest form we could define African music as music that has its origin, African i.e. music of the Africans.

The language of African music is best understood by the Africans themselves in that it is deeply rooted in the totality of all that make African culture.

Africa is a land of the blacks i.e. it consists of over 100% of black people of the world. they have some many traditions which are still prevalent and common among them till the present day. Inspite of the missionary incursions and introductions of European civilization through formal education, these traditions which in another word refer to culture, are all dependent on African music. culture as we know is the totality of all life experiences a man passes through, such experiences include the occupation, the dress pattern, the language, the belief, the value system, music, art crafts the favourite foods of the society.

African music culture is experienced and the overall African culture is experienced and understood. Through performance of African music, it is easy to get more exposed to other African cultural traits (traditions). African music is all encompassing, culture wise. A true African music is any music composed in African idioms, purposely for the propagation of African musical heritage. It is indeed a “search light” to all African cultural practices. A believe of African culture. Thus, all musical experience that spurs Africans to their best at job and mood wise. Hence, the performance of one form of music or the other consciously or spontaneously, from time to time, with or without formal settings, individually or as a group the reaction of an African music is one of the best, in appreciating music in more desirous ways. For example, an average African does not wait for formal invitation to partake in singing or dancing to a good music. it is music that shapes their works, regulates their life and beautifies their society from the foregoing Nigeria as part of Africa has many kinds of folk and popular music, some of which are known all over the world. The styles of folk music are related to the multitudes of ethnic groups in the country, each of the groups have their own techniques, instruments and songs. The main ethnic groups are the Igbo, Hausa and the Yoruba traditional music from Nigeria are always functional, in other words, it is performed to mark a rite such as a wedding or funeral and not just for pure entertainment or artistic enjoyment. Although some Nigerians, especially children and the elders play instruments for their own amusement, solo performance is otherwise rare. For example, work song are common type of traditional Nigerian music. It helps to keep the rhythms of workers on the filed, women use complex rhythms in housekeeping tasks, such as pounding yam to highly ornamented music. In the northern regions, farmers work together on each others farm and the host is expected to supply musicians for his neighbours, while the work on his farm likewise applicable to the Western folks, especially the Yoruba with rich language in songs and music, situation among Yorubas has a corresponding song, which is inspirational and educational. The songs in Yoruba and are categories into traditional song, Christian song, and Islamic song.

Indeed, music is an important aspect of all human culture (Merriam, 1964). Musical activity involves a mental context of societal organisations and structures, and relates to all kinds of interactions with other humans, with nature and with materials objects and machines.
